Lesson from the commute: The “cute” shoe

I’m not a lady, and I don’t understand the facination with the shoes. I like a good comfortable shoe that is durable and that is a good thing because I a fair amount of walking everyday. But, some women seem to be into shoes. Not just any shoe, but exotic uncomfortable shoes. Their shoes always looks good with the outfit, but something isn’t right to me. I’m not sure if it is the way shoe makes them hobble on nonchalantly or if the playful bandaids they wear to cover up the places where their “cute” shoes dug into their feet that strikes me as something odd.

In the software development world, we sometimes wear “cute” shoes that hurt our feet. Sometimes we pick the newest and hottest framework (shoe) that actually sets our craft back five to ten years. Sometimes we wear the latest shoe because everyone else is wearing them. Sometimes we wear old crappy shoes that really don’t do us any good, but we continue wearing them because we’ve been wearing them for a long time and it is hard to find new shoes that fit us.

I’m not going to offer any advice to people who don’t wear comfortable shoes. It is their feet, and they know how much pain they can take. I’ll just ask a question to the reader:

What type of shoes are you wearing? How much do you wince as they cut into your feet?
