Nice article!
I kept catching myself smiling at all the things that irritate you in TextMate. Especially the part about split windows! I just hope this feature gets included in the next major release.

Will try keep my comment brief...
Shortly after switching to Mac I found myself accomplishing tasks faster than you could even read what was going on (possibly faster than I would finish the thought - haha) and it really did become a tool that was an extention of myself. TextMate for me is the closest text editor to fit that description.

I've compared Emacs and VIM and decided (eventually!) that I would learn Emacs. I'm enjoying learning it, especially all the keyboard shortcuts. My brain(fingers) seems to remember most of them, and it really gives you a good feeling of control over what you want to acomplish.

As for my choice... since I'm on a Mac and am pretty much happy with TextMate as my primary editor, I'm going to hold out for the next major release to see where it stands. If I'm still left wanting, I'll sacrifice a few MORE hours in the quest for the perfect text editor.

“Now we fast forward to late 2008, and I’m still using Textmate. It’s pretty much the same editor I was using back in 2006.”

My Emacs isn’t. I have extended it quite a bit since then.
