Choosing between Linode and Slicehost

This weekend, I’ve been moving from Slicehost to Linode. I’ve been with Slicehost for a couple of years now, and I’ve wanted to refresh my setup, so I decided to try out Linode.

In the past tho years, I can’t think of any outages that I’ve had with Slicehost or any major problems. Every time I’ve had a question, they’ve been extra helpful on IRC.

With the ongoing recession, I’ve been looking for ways to cut my expenditures. I’m not actually not feeling the pain (knock on wood), but as I reflect on what is going on all around me, I’ve come to the conclusion that now is the perfect time to start tightening my purse strings.

For the sites I host, I couldn’t justify the costs for the Slicehost 512MB plan. The Linode 540 is almost $10/month cheaper with more memory to boot. I also really enjoy the Linode admin console.

  • You posted this 4 months ago, let us know how it's going now on linode, since you have some time under your belt there.

In fact, now is the worst possible time to cut your expenditures! Recessions turn into depressions when people cut all their spending and start hoardin!
  • you also get 32-bit OS which makes the memory an even sweeter deal. :)
  • I've been looking at moving from Slicehost to Linode also for the same reasons. Might be worth your while to check out mosso.com too. It's Rackspace's pay by the hour hosting service.
  • What's it going to take for you to move over? Scooting a trillion client sites to Linode, or just your blog?
  • All I'm moving are my personal sites. I have less than 10 currently.
  • I did the same thing several months ago and have been very impressed with Linode. I agree, more bang for the buck was my reasoning too.
