Keeping tabs on your yak shaving

It happens to all of us. We start on some task, and the next thing we know, we’ve wandered off completing a task, so we can complete the first task. This happens again and again, and we end up not knowing where we were in the first place. I wanted to share my current method of keeping tabs on my yak shaves. This particular method uses OmniFocus in a not quite standard way.

What I’m doing there is taking advantage of the OmniFocus nesting ability. As I diverge from my first task, I just indent a level and keep it moving. When I’m done, I just move up a level.

One issue that was pointed out to me is that this method can get unwieldy if I am nesting eight or more levels. I totally agree with this, and my answer is if you get this far, you are no longer yak shaving, and you should either start a new project, or reevaluate what you are doing.

  • Wow, really cool unintended use (i.e. hack?) for that tool.

Your last part reminds me of the Linus Torvalds quote: "If you need more than 3 levels of indentation, you're screwed anyway, and should fix your program."
